Voices from the Field: Meurig Jones

Headteacher Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd

Meurig grew up in Ontario, Canada before his parents moved back to Cwmaman Aberdare during the 80s. After a short period as a pupil at the local English school, Meurig had the opportunity to start Welsh education at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Aberdâr. His time at school was very enjoyable and as a result, it was an easy decision for him to pursue a career as a teacher. Meurig attended Rhydfelen for his secondary eduaction, before moving to Coleg y Trindod and then onto Aberystwyth University.

Meurig started his  career as a drama and media teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf at the beginning of the millennium. Here he learnt his trade, enjoying every moment and gaining beneficial experiences.

In 2011, Meurig moved to Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Llangynwyd as Assistant Head, then became deputy head, before becoming Head of the school in 2016.

“It is a privilege to lead Bridgend’s only Welsh secondary school, by ensuring as Team Llan, that we give the best education and tangible opportunities to our learners through the Welsh language. It was an honour in 2022 to win Headteacher of the Year at the National Awards for Wales and the silver prize at the Pearson National Teaching Awards. It is nice to be able to celebrate this key profession and promote Welsh education across the United Kingdom and beyond.”
