Russ Dwyer

Associate

Russell Dwyer is headteacher at St Thomas Community Primary School in Swansea. He has been headteacher since 2013.

Russ was a Pioneer School Lead for the Digital Competency Framework when it was introduced, and a Quality Improvement Lead for Health and Well-being. He has previously been an Estyn Peer Inspector and he is a representative on a number of groups for Swansea primary headteachers. Currently St Thomas is a Network Lead School for Yr Athrofa, and has responsibility for placing student teachers in several Swansea primary schools. Russell was instrumental in bringing ‘Operation Encompass’ to Swansea, ensuring schools receive prompt and relevant information in relation to domestic violence incidences. This allows schools to provide timely support to the affected child, if needed.

Inclusion is something Russ strives for in every sense of the word, and he believes the best way to achieve this is to ensure the whole school community is supported. If we want the best for our children, we need to make sure the adults around them are supported too. Parental engagement is therefore key in St Thomas, as is the health and well-being of the whole school family.

Russ is originally from Aberbargoed; a village in the South Wales Rhymney valley. However, following a History degree and PGCE in Swansea, he relocated to Llanelli, where he now lives with his wife, Sarah and their two children, Mollie and Jac. He is interested in history, space and he also enjoys a good film or book!
