Neil currently holds the role of Headteacher of Ysgol Friars in Bangor, Gwynedd, a bilingual 11-18 community comprehensive school with 1,288 pupils on roll. He has extensive experience of serving on advisory groups and acting as an advocate for school leaders and has been a member of Welsh Government advisory groups.
He is member of 14-19 schools’ partnership in north-west Wales, the Schools’ Budget Forum, local consultative committees and has served as a teacher representative on the education and subsequently service scrutiny committees. He has a broader experience of governance as Chair of a company owned by the NUT which operated a training and conference centre and as a non-executive director of Teachers Assurance.
Neil learnt Welsh in his thirties and now considers himself largely fluent. He has extensive experience of dealing with underachievement as an Everton season ticket holder. He is also addicted to Sky Cinema.
